New tatami mats may have white powder on them. It is the trace of a process called "mud dyeing. Please be sure to wipe off the white soil on the surface with a dry towel before use.
New tatami mats may have small needle holes or folds left over from the work, but these are not flaws.
The color of the tatami surface changes over time.
